Essl Social Prize - prize winning project 2009 opened

After just a few months building time, "Tibor háza" (the prize winning project of the Essl Social Prize 2009) was today officially opened.  With the prize money of €1Million a nursing home (incorporating an hospice) for mentally handicapped people in Csömör, near Budapest has been created.

In 2009 the Essl Social Prize went to the Hungarian Szekeres Tibornè. She began over 22 years ago to build up the foundation „for equal prospects!". With her initiative she originally wanted to create better living conditions for her severly handicaped son. Since then numerous housing and workplaces for disabled people have been developed, where they can be supported in various ways. With the prize money from the Essl Social Prize 2009, a three-storey building including hospice („Tibor háza“) was built for mentally handicapped people. There is room for 30 people plus carers. For these people a home has been created in which all their special needs can be catered for, and where they can be cared for with dignity until their death.

The house was completed within a few months near to the exisiting facility in Csömör/ Budapest, and will be officially opened today.

The Essl Social Prize will be presented for the third time on 17.04.2010, and is endowed with prize money of €1Million. The prize is awarded annually to ground-breaking projects from private social initiatives by Social Entrepreneurs.
